Friendship has been studied in academic fields such as sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles. A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier. Such characteristics include affection, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other's company, trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one's feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend.
The objective of this article is to analyze questions related to the sexual-affective practices of "hooking up", "seeing each other" and starting relationships, noting its differences. The work draws from various theoretical studies addressing this issue by other authors in human and social sciences. The empirical data are comprised by extensive semi-structured interviews with twelve youths between the ages of 18 and 25 living in Rio de Janeiro. The forms by which young people build and live out their romantic relationships contribute to the development of a romantic field that is increasingly unstable and complex.
